India Shines On Its 60th Republic Day Celebrations!

The Constitution of India came into effect on January 26, 1950. Henceforth, this day has been celebrated as The Republic Day in India. It is a national holiday.

Today India celebrated its 60th anniversary of becoming a Republic under the watchful eyes of our President, Pratibha Patil.

While back in Mangalore, pub revelers at “Amnesia” were beaten up by the activists of a self appointed, moral watchdog – The Ram Sena.

What a beautiful contrast!

We have a woman president presiding over the Republic Day celebrations in the capital while women were molested and beaten up by the Ram Sena activists in Mangalore.

The news channels, throughout the day replayed this ghastly incident. The fact that most of the perpetrators were young was disturbing. The incident that was played on the news channels showed women being shoved around, slapped, molested and beaten up.

I can not imagine how some soul-less people appoint themselves as moral watchdogs. I can not imagine why the government allowed such groups to mushroom in the first place.

But what I can not understand is how the media news channels came to know of the incident as they were there on the scene, to capture it. If the media was there capturing the incident, why wasn’t the police there too! Did the media, desperately looking for content, did not inform the police? What has happened to the moral obligations of Mass Media?

When rogue groups like Ram Sena indulge in such activities to garner fame followed by political clout, why is the government taking its own sweet time to react? Such groups should be banned and action needs to be taken in order to prevent similar incidents from happening elsewhere. A precedent has to be set.

India should not allow itself to be Talibanised. We do not want groups like RSS, Bajrang Dal, MNS, Ram Sena and the likes dictate to us on our lifestyle. It is about time the government quits dilly-dallying and takes stern measures. These organizations should be declared as terrorist organizations as they terrorize people.

  1. Wonderful blog & Wierdest incident in Mangalore.I strongly agree that such groups should be banned. When females were targeted, what makes them think that men are free to do this...? Everybody has got equal right.. Why men can drink & women cant... Im not commenting that who can drink & who not... We dont have a communalism rule here... Also the group name is so called Ram Sena... Wierdoo...Ram never preached to assault people... I wish I was there at that place when this crime happened. Would have made those animals unconcious...

    ...
At one point this looks as if the group wanted to be in news and did this act.. Orelse why on that day?
    ...
Whoever it is, one shud not forget human values..
India is the only country where we respect women and worship her.
We are know for this feature..
Now because few people the name and the fame is being stained..
    ..

Let the voice raise against such acts..
    Let the voice be heard..
    Let the change happen..
Let it begin from each one of us..
    ..

  4. It was so painful seeing in news channels regarding this horrific attack in Mangalore on young women! The trauma suffered by the young women is inexcusable...The State should do the right thing - and to be seen to be doing it...more over I wish women are empowered soon...such that even if someone tries to molest them..they give back properly...the sick part is that molesting women is not seen as crime by many men in India and 99% of molestation cases in India go unreported!!!!! Crime against women is not a new thing in India as in every 32 second one woman is raped, in every 25 second one woman is killed (including female foeticide) and in every 18 second one woman is molested in India.
So instead of waiting for the Govt to take action, if women themselves get empowered to fight against this crime, that's much better!!!

  7. Thanks Shilz.

I guess Women should start asserting themselves, learn basic self defense techniques (these can be learnt by watching an expert giving a demo, but joining a class would be even better) and most importantly fight back.

  8. Sexy chiks...i lik moral-policing but i dont like violence. those chicks at the pub must learn the fact that india is not US.or the west. Indians should follow good manners and customs.. indian gals cant wear 2 pieces showing everytin they own. and thats for the boys too. learn to respect your tradition..even thailand is getting bad name becos of western culture..

Individual opinions are always respected. But do not impose your opinions on others. Who the hell are you to decide what Indian gals should wear? Sculptures on our temples show women and deities without clothes. Is that not tradition? Should it not be imposed right away?

Traditions and customs change with time. We need to adjust accordingly.

  10. Thrashing women in the name of God and culture. Is this Hinduism? I'm a Hindu. My parents are Hindu. How dare these people use my religion to terrorise young girls!Really sick!!!

  11. Most shocking was the audacity with which the attacks were carried out: In broad daylight and in full view of cameras and video-tapes!

  12. I just don't know anymore. In some ways, I feel that this incident in Mangalore has changed everything. This hasn't happened before. Sure, there have been isolated incidents with drunken hoodlums, like the 2008 New Year's molestation case in Juhu, Mumbai. This Mangalore attack was highly organised. It was politically motivated.

  13. But does it represent the 'Talibanisation' of India, as some commentators have described it? That might be an exaggeration...still, the comparison is easy to make: In both cases, religion has been politicised to infringe upon the rights of women.
