What is your greatest fear?

Today I asked this question to my friends, and below were the replies:

  • Fear of going blank
  • Fear of the word 'FEAR' itself
  • Fear of being different from others
  • Fear of being emotional
  • Fear of darkness
  • Fear of feeling insecure
  • Fear of losing my skin complexion
  • Fear of death
  • Fear of drowning
  • Fear of my inability to quit smoking
  • Fear of being unable to care for myself
  • Fear of seeing owls
  • Fear of the unknown within me
  • Fear of being hurt by loved ones
  • Fear of silence
  • Fear of being fat/ugly
  • Fear of losing my loved ones
  • Fear of a thought about falling from mountains or helicopters
  • Being a loser
  • Fear of staying alone
  • Fear of getting married
  • Scared of heights
  • Fear of being alone without family and friends
  • Fear of my possessive nature
  • Fear of loving a man, I would love a dog without any fear, because dogs won’t breakup, neither will they wake up one day and tell, “I don’t love you anymore…”
  • Fear of air suffocating me
  • Fear of the unexpected

Recently read one blog post titled, “Five Great Ways to Conquer YourFears” on Zenhabits.net. In this blog post the author says, “Whatever your fears may be, you can either let those fears form boundaries beyond which you can’t move or grow, or you can face them head-on and allow them to become opportunities to move into new places in your life.  The choice is truly yours. “

Actually this strategy works, first you find out what are your fears, and then you convert those fears into your strengths. Till now, I have conquered few of my fears using this strategy. Try it today people, who knows it might work for you too, or you may find your own way of dealing with your fears while trying this method! However, talk to yourself about your fears; do not feel that you are a weak person if you have some kind of fear. It is very much human to have fears, but slowly we have to learn to stretch ourselves...going beyond our fears, isn’t it?

Raw versus Processed!

One day I was thinking about people with whom I can be just myself, no matter what I think, what I feel, what I love to do and what I dislike...these people accept me as I am and love me so much for being just ME.

While I was thinking about such people in my life, I felt there are two kinds of thoughts raw and processed. Raw thoughts are those which are escaped from the processing in our brain...it is what we feel, it is spontaneous and when you have people in your life with whom you can share such thoughts without any fear, without any shame, without weighing those thoughts, without being worried of consequences...it is a real blessing!

And, next there are processed thoughts - think before you speak type - which are weighed much in our brain, before expressed, thinking if it is right or wrong to express this, and if yes, in what way it should be expressed, what words should be used...how can I communicate it right, all these things.

I do not mean that we can be rude with those with whom we share raw thoughts/emotions...it is just that we are spontaneous with them, sharing trust with each other that neither of us have any intention to hurt, and we share with honesty...what ever we feel...naturally...and this can happen only with a complete acceptance of a person. Moreover, in case of people with whom you share raw emotions or thoughts and just be yourself, there will be love at first place, which is more important than anything!

Be yourself, no matter what you are...if you go on losing your individuality, then you will have to replace yourself with someone else created by others for you! Never let that disaster happen to you at any point of time in your life!

Be careful before you split your tablets!

Here is a small note for those who take tablets splitting them. Even I used to do it often being lazy to search for tablets of dosage that I wanted. However, now I have changed this habit of mine, since there are a range of options available for those tablets.

Many researchers warn that splitting tablets into two or more parts is potentially dangerous (since tablet parts are often unequal in size) and could lead to people taking the wrong dose.  Specifically, with regard to pills that have a narrow margin between a therapeutic and a toxic dose, it is more dangerous. A study published in the Journal of Advanced Nursing has revealed that 31 percent of split tablets deviated from the recommended dose by at least 15 percent and sometimes by more than 25 percent. The study suggested that the pharmaceutical firms should produce a range of options, including smaller or bigger dose tablets.

If suppose the dosage prescribed for you is not available in the market, then I feel it is better to talk to your doctor about it once, and confirm if it is fine to split tablets to take recommended dose.

Take care, and be healthy!

Controversies whirling around company-sponsored search results that appear on Internet search engines

According to the U.S. FDA, company-sponsored search results that appear on Internet search engines should not contain therapeutic claims if they also contain drug names. FDA suggested this in a cluster of letters to 14 firms citing 48 products. Among products cited in the spate of letters was Biogen Idec's multiple sclerosis drug Tysabri. Biogen said, "Unlike the other products flagged, Tysabri has a disciplined risk management program in place and no patient in the U.S. can gain access to the drug without formal enrollment in the REMS TOUCH program, so the risks are all clearly explained by the physician before prescribing."

Biogen Idec and GlaxoSmithKline are among 14 companies that have received warning letters from the FDA cautioning the companies about their Internet advertising. Jennifer Neiman, a spokeswoman for Biogen, said the FDA letter dated March 26 questioned the use of sponsored links to promote Biogen’s multiple sclerosis treatment Tysabri. Neiman points out that patients can gain access to Tysabri only after formally enrolling in Biogen’s risk management program under a physician’s supervision. “We’ve been highly transparent,” said Neiman.

Brian Orelli commented on Fool.com that the FDA brought out the paddywagon last week, issuing 14 warning letters all circling around the same theme: It is still an ad, even if you have to click on it. Brian said that avoiding "sponsored links" will change the way drugmakers advertise, but he is not convinced it would be a major problem for sales. Brian added, “I imagine that most of the advertisements were effective for increasing brand recognition -- or convincing patients to switch from, say, Pfizer's Rebif to Biogen Idec and Elan's Tysabri -- rather than convincing patients to start treating a medical issue that they wouldn't have treated without the advertisements. It's one less tool in the arsenal, but all the companies are on a level playing field, and cumulative sales shouldn't be hurt that much.”

Brain says, "One has to wonder why the FDA picked now to issue the warnings, since the drugmakers have been advertising like this for quite a while. If the new administration has decided to be generally tougher on pharmaceutical companies, that's certainly bad news for the industry, and a trend worth watching for investors."

The voice of silence...

Why is that sometimes one can understand the feelings unspoken but can't understand words spoken! I really wonder and it is so very strange. Unspoken feelings when understood by our loved ones make us immensely happy. It is a real blessing to find someone who can respond to your unspoken feelings. Sometimes the communication that two hearts have in silence is more beautiful than the words shared....it reminds me of a song…one of my most favorites…“When you say nothing at all”.

Its amazing how you can speak right to my heart
Without saying a word, you can light up the dark
Try as I may I could never explain
What I hear when you dont say a thing

The smile on your face lets me know that you need me
Theres a truth in your eyes saying youll never leave me
The touch of your hand says youll catch me when ever I fall
You say it best..when you say nothing at all

All day long I can hear people talking out loud
But when you hold me near, you drown out the crowd (the crowd)
Try as they may they can never define
Whats been said between your heart and mine

The smile on your face
The truth in your eyes
The touch of your hand
Lets me know that you need me..

(you say it best when you say nothing at all
You say it best when you say nothing at all..)

WWF Earth Hour: Join in...

Citizens from across 85 countries in over 800 cities around the world are switching their lights off on March 28, 2009 for one hour, from 8.30PM to 9.30PM, to raise their voice against climate change. It's now happening in India for the first time. Tell your family, friends and colleagues about WWF Earth Hour and ask them to join in and switch off for a healthy planet.

This year
Earth Hour (Vasundhara Ghatika) has been transformed into the world’s first ‘global election’, pitting earth against global warming. For the first time in history, people of all ages, nationalities, race and background have the opportunity to use their light switch to vote; switching off your lights is a vote for earth, while leaving them on is a vote for global warming.

Earth Hour began in Sydney in 2007, when 2.2 million homes and businesses switched off their lights for one hour. In 2008, the message had grown into a global sustainability movement, with over five crore people switching off their lights. The Social Forestry Department (SFD) has appealed to all its 9,000 eco-clubs and four lakh student-members to observe the Earth Hour on March 28. Over 74 countries and territories have pledged their support to vote for earth during the Earth Hour, and this number is growing everyday, officials said.

What will you be doing at 8.30pm on Saturday March 28th? We're keen to know what you have planned for Earth Hour 2009. If you'd like to share your plans with us, then please email us at
80feetroad@gmail.com. describing the details of what you have planned for Earth Hour 2009.

Greed for money makes a father ruthless!

As I started my day at office, I read this news which horrified me and left me in painful silence. The Mumbai police have arrested a 60-year-old man from Mira Road area for allegedly raping his elder daughter for the last 9 years. The ordeal began in 2000 when his elder daughter was 11-year-old. The elder daughter, now 21, was allegedly raped for 10 years. The businessman started raping his second daughter - a 15-year-old - just a few months ago. The mother of the two girls has also been arrested for abetment. How disgusting is that! The man apparently acted on the advice of a self-proclaimed tantric friend who advised him to establish physical relations with his daughter to improve his financial condition. Along with him, the mother of those two girls and the tantric have also been arrested for abetting the incest.

One side we talk of globalization, rationalization, fighting blind beliefs all that and the other side such horrible acts happen! I was just thinking of those two girls, who were exploited for the prosperity of family and to obtain financial stability! How much painful it will be for those two girls, usually if any problem comes in the childhood or teenage, we go to our parents, share with them and feel so happy sharing every little thing…let it be a bigger or smaller thing. But, where will such girls go, if parents themselves push them into such a living hell!!! How painful it is and what will happen to those poor little girls…how badly their hearts must be wounded along with the physical abuse!!! Thank God atleast the elder daughter revealed about this insane act! She confided in her maternal grandmother when she saw her younger sister being targeted just as she had been by her father. The girls further disclosed that the tantric had raped the younger sister, who is now 15-year-old. For now, the girls are staying with their maternal grandmother and uncle.

Kiss therapy for women with low sex hormone levels!

Kisses can be therapies helping to promote fertility in women! When women were administered Kisspeptin, which is a hormone produced by the "KISS-1" gene, ovulation and fertility was restored in a few. This can be a very good news for women with low sex hormone levels. Animals and humans lacking this kisspeptin hormone do not go through puberty and remain sexually immature, and this is in favour of this new research finding. Kisspeptin is basically the product of the KISS-1 gene and it is a G-protein coupled receptor ligand for GPR54. KISS-1 gene was originally identified as a gene that has the ability to suppress melanoma and breast cancer metastasis. However, several studies have made it clear that kisspeptin-GPR54 signaling has a significant role in initiating secretion of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (also called as luteinizing-hormone) at puberty. Kisspeptin hormone activates the release of sex hormones, which are responsible for controlling the menstrual cycle. Well, this field has several ongoing research studies.

One thing that is very interesting about this KISS-1 gene is the history behind its naming! The naming of the KISS-1 gene and Kisspeptin, was made by a team of researchers, who discovered the gene in Hershey, Pennsylvania, famous for its chocolate "Hershey's Kisses" (bite-sized pieces of chocolate manufactured by The Hershey Company).

What's the biggest strength of a woman?

Sowjanya Shankar: Her perseverance

Rocksta: Lots of them....I can narrow it down to two: forgiveness and patience

Shilz: “Being a woman”

Usha Gokak: Multi-tasking and patience

Hari Prasad: Character

Mouli Bhattacharya: Patience

Surprisingly, most of the women, I asked did not know what is their biggest strength! They just said they do not know and did not want to talk about it further.

Koi mil gaya...!!!

Wondering...why I am talking about this 2003 movie now!?

That's because our Indian researchers have discovered three alien micro organisms!

Our Indian scientists from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) have discovered three new species of bacteria in the upper stratosphere. Stratosphere is a layer of Earth’s atmosphere and it is layered in temperature because it is heated from above by absorption of ultraviolet radiation from the Sun. Three new species of bacteria found are highly resistant to ultraviolet radiation and these species are not found anywhere on the earth! This leads to doubts that if these species are of extra terrestrial origin! These three species have been named as Janibacter hoylei, Bacillus isronensis and Bacillus aryabhata. A 26.7 million cubic feet balloon carrying a 459 kg scientific payload soaked in 38 kg of liquid neon was flown by researchers from the National Balloon Facility in Hyderabad, operated by the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. The payload consisted of a cryosampler (also called as cryogenic sampler) containing 16 evacuated and sterilized stainless steel probes.

Generally, a cryogenically cooled adsorber is used in such a system for maintaining the vacuum. Stratospheric air was collected using this balloon-borne cryogenic sampler. And, the probes were telecommand opened/closed at pre- determined altitudes. Throughout the flight, the probes remained immersed in liquid neon to create a cryopump effect. And, for those who are wondering what is this cryopump…well, it is nothing but a vacuum pump, which is able to trap gases and vapors by condensing them on a cold surface. The cylinders used for collecting air samples from different heights ranging from 20 km to 41 km, were later parachuted down and safely retrieved by researchers.

They detected 12 bacterial and six fungal colonies, nine of which showed greater than 98 percent similarity with known species on our Earth. However, three bacterial colonies were totally new species! This experiment does not assure the extra-terrestrial origin of these three species but certainly provides an immense encouragement for those who are highly interested in exploring the origin of life!

80 Feet Road Is Now 1 Year Old!

Wowwww, has not the year just flown by! Times flies isn’t it!

Happy birthday to ‘80 Feet Road Blog’! I still cannot believe that we have completed one year! My ship of blogging has begun its long journey through this blog. I wanted to give my self a voice and this happened with this very first blog. I found blogging as a better way to unveil myself and unwind my thoughts. I can't believe how many of us started up our own blogs around the same time last year. I feel like we're the baby boomers of blogging. I wish 2009 will be a great year for those of us who continue blogging like crazy ;)

I have certainly enjoyed one-year of blogging along with the comments we were getting for the posts. There have been some excellent discussions along the way in our 1-year journey, with some people being great and adding real value to the posts. And, what makes all of us happy is that we have a group of loyal readers of our posts and that increases our enthusiasm to write more. When deeper thoughts start to flow, just strike it, and blog! The so called ‘bloggish inspiration’ comes and goes but maintaining a balance is very much needed.

I’m a little late in congratulating my fellow bloggers but I did not want to miss an opportunity to congratulate you all on the one year anniversary of our blog and to thank you all for putting immense efforts to keep the site updated and more interesting.

Thanks for all your support and contributions in this first year of blogging, there’s still lots more to discuss…we assure you :) We're happy about our progress this past year and will try achieving more of success this year. All of you are welcome to jump in and join our reader community - and no doubt people…it's a lot of fun! :)

Cheers!

Green builidings as a part of green lifestyle!

Thanks to a growing awareness of the green building concept in our country. Trust me, this is such a beautiful concept. A green building uses less energy, water and natural resources, creates less waste and is healthier for the people living inside compared to a standard building. Sticking to worldwide standards in constructing buildings, the Tata Housing Development Company Ltd., has built Bangalore’s first Green IT park, Xylem near Whitefield.

Tata Housing’s Xylem, an environment friendly green IT park and the only LEED Gold certified building in Bengaluru, is an engineering marvel, which not only saves energy and cooling costs but also gives more lung space and natural light for employees working there.

Xylem was selected for "Project of the year- Bengaluru" award by Accommodation Times, India's oldest knowledge-based periodical on real estate. Xylem, the first of its kind green building in Bengaluru received the trade honor close on the heels of becoming the only building in the city to receive the LEED Gold certification. The award was conferred to Tata Housing at a gala event at the Nehru Centre Auditorium in Mumbai on February 24, 2009. Green buildings are popping up and for good reason—green design elements not only help save environmental resources, they also boost the bottom line and are good for health and morale. Sophisticated buyers and companies leasing office space are willing to pay a premium for the benefits that green buildings offer.

This IT Park has been designed to tackle the ‘Sick building syndrome’, with its major focus on occupants’ health with an ergonomic design and architecture. The design boosts employee productivity as well as helps reduce the operational cost of the building. Solar panels cover the 35% of the terrace floor space, which acts as a standby power for the common passage areas providing 23kW of power translating to 27,530 KwHr of annual power leading to a saving of Rs 150,463 per annum. Xylem uses rainwater harvesting and 100% of the wastewater is recycled for landscaping use.

Sensory taps are installed at all basins and toilets that further reduce the water consumption. Overall, the building is designed to be approximately 19% more efficient in operational cost as compared to a conventional building. Other benefits include savings of 26.6% on air-conditioning power & cooling costs, 34.1% saving on water supply and 1.6% on common area power.

So, what you say for the concept of green builidings - YES or NO?

E-bikes

E-Bikes, which run on electric power stored in battery, gives a mileage of around 50km. at a maximum speed of 25kms/hrs in one charge. Charging an e-bike is as simple as recharging a mobile phone! Connect the charger to the battery and the charger to a three pin domestic electric points & switch on the electricity and the battery starts getting charged. The charger automatically disconnects after the battery is fully charged, displaying green Led.

India based R.K.Motors has introduced "Snappy 180" Watts E-bike in the year 2005. Due to requirement of higher loading capacity “Snappy 2.4” 240 watts was launched in February 2006. Cost wise it is very economical at a price of Rs.19080/-** and 240 watts for Rs. 24,500/-**. "Matrix" is launched in September 2006.

Give a chance for your wounds to heal !

By Shilpa Nangali

Sometimes it so happens that we confuse dreams with reality and at such stage we fail to see the truth. However, an awful and most painful defeat of life comes when you surrender your dreams to reality. This may stop you from dreaming. You may feel like a bird with its wings being wounded making it unable to fly! Just imagine, how terrible it is if the person whom you love the most, cuts your wings…totally disastrous, isn't it ? I have no words to explain such pain but I have seen the pain of such people. Now, they are happy, and guess why? That’s because they understood that they are the ones who should take care of themselves and they are the ones who should see to that they give a chance for their wounds to heal!

Remember, if you are the one who never wants your wounds to heal, then nothing or no one can help you!

We face a lot of conceivable troubles while struggling to get the real happiness we need in our lives. I have seen one thing that life is a hell both for an idealistic person and a practical person. A blend of idealistic & practical view is what needed to live a happy life. In my battle to achieve this blend, I have now become realistic! I feel that’s much better!

Suffering is stronger than any other teaching

By Shilpa Nangali

We have to live each day as if it were our last. The past is over & gone, let’s not live in it. If you are lost in the past, you can’t see the sunshine of your future. However, the future is not guaranteed, so we should give the best we can today.

I always have felt & realized one thing that blessings alone do not open our eyes. Most of the times, we come closer to the God within us in the “breaking” & not in the “blessing”. If we look at the positive aspects in every incidence of our life, that’s probably one of the best ways to enjoy LIFE as a blessing and make it worth living!

Suffering is stronger than any other teaching, because it teaches us how we should be…we might be bent & broken, but that’s what gets us into a better shape and helps us fine tune our life!

An intelligent pill...

By Shilpa C Nangali

You might have heard a lot about iPod, iRobots but have u ever heard about an iPill? Wondering what it is?

Definitely not Cipla’s emergency contraceptive!

Philips has developed an "intelligent pill" (iPill), which contains a microprocessor, battery, wireless radio, pump and a drug reservoir. The uniqueness of this iPill is that it can release medication in a specific area in the body. This iPill capsule can measure acidity with a sensor to determine its location in the gut, and can then release drugs where they are needed. This iPill is especially useful for those who are suffering from digestive tract disorders. Delivering drugs to treat digestive tract disorders such as Crohn's disease directly to the location of the disease means doses can be lower, reducing side effects.

However, capsules containing miniature cameras are already used as diagnostic tools but one disadvantage with these capsules is lack of the ability to deliver drugs. Also, these iPills can measure the local temperature and report it wirelessly to an external receiver!

But I don’t understand why everything must start with “i” ??? ;)

Paris - Going Green...

By Shilz

A couple of days back, I read a review about a new self-service "bicycle transit system" called Vélib’ in Paris. This is a public bicycle rental program in Paris, France. 10,000 bicycles were introduced to the city with 750 automated rental stations each with 15 or more bikes/spaces. This number has since grown to 20,000 bicycles and 1,450 stations, about 1 station every 300 m throughout the city centre, making Vélib’ the largest system of its kind in the world.

Guess what? There are daily, weekly, monthly and annual passes available for residents to access these bikes which can be picked up and returned at any of the stations. Easier and simple! To access the bikes, riders can select a one-day card for 1 euro, a weekly card for 5 euros or an annual card for 29 euros. Each Velib’ parking station will be equipped with muni-meters to purchase one and 7-day passes and to pay any additional charges once the bike is dropped off. The Velib’ meters will also provide information on other station locations.

With this system, no worries of obesity or environmental pollution. By using such bicycles, you will not only be healthy, but also save our planet, Earth. After all, this magnificent earth is our only home.

How savage is that love which plants a seed in one field and uproots another...!

By Shilz

One of my friend, who lost her love, said: "It hurts to breathe because every breath I take proves I can't live without him."

Sometimes it so happens that the spectre of a person's non negotiable past hangs between that person and the one who is trying to read him/her....I feel that a broken heart is not just an empty metaphor but a grievous wound to one's persona !

I have seen several friends who are tormenting greatly because of this. I agree that a mind does not have a so called DELETE button to delete the memories that haunt us or bring us pain ! There is no such thing as "getting over it" !!! A wound can heal but the scar always remains...those words, those dreams shared..those broken promises...those gestures...those caring ways...nothing of those can be erased...may be we pretend to have forgotten everything but such things always remain in our minds....strange is that such memories bring us pain & sometimes laughter...!!!

Not each one of us know the pain & passion of broken hearts..of how cruel people can be to those whom they loved once or may be still love...how opportunistic & mean people can be...to fulfill their needs in the name of love...if we don't know that pain then we are the most luckiest!!!!
However, sometimes it so happens that such pains mark as the foundation stones for achieving something really BIG!!!

Sometimes I wonder..how savage is that love which plants a seed in one field and uproots another field !!!

There is always something to be happy about....!!! With this post, I just request all those broken hearts to smile...because The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit!

Learn respecting the difference in opinions...

By Shilz

Guys truth cannot be found in arguments! Learn respecting the difference in opinions. Don’t try to prove someone wrong just because you think that what ever you know is true!

We view life in our own perspective. That’s not wrong, but when we try to say someone is wrong when they express their view of seeing life, then its absolutely our mistake. I hate such people who heap their opinions on me, I am not here to carry anyone’s shit…neither anyone of you right? If you are not ready, then how can you do that with someone else?

Opportunities present themselves to give us the chance to achieve greater accomplishments in our life and in the world. We create our destiny with every action and decision we make, by using our talents, with our daily effort, with our hard work as we try to achieve our goals and make our dreams come true. Even when we have failed before we are able to recreate our future with new and better decisions with the lessons learned from our mistakes. We are able to renew our faith in people, in love, in God, in all the things we chose not to have faith anymore and let the experience give a new meaning and purpose to our life.

Every day that we chose to do or not something we are creating our destiny, it is a journey not a destination. It evolves, grows and changes with time. It serves us in the manner that suits us.

I do not believe in destiny. To believe in it will be to renounce to the possibility of so many things in my life. It’s just an excuse in letting things happen instead of MAKING them happen. Destiny is the usual “scapegoat” when we don’t fully understand what happens at the beginning and at the end. But in between, it is all up to us…and what's "in between" is what actually counts the most. I think "fate" is just a way to blame the cosmos for the outcomes of our actions rather than taking responsibility (good or bad) for them ourselves.

Fate/destiny is the entity we love to put the blame on when we're wrong or when we are helpless. A guy may break up with a gal & put the blame on fate saying that he is unable to convince his parents for marriage. A son may tell to his father that it’s all his fate when he is unable to understand mathematics…examples go on…

I would like to say one thing here that instead of fighting amongst ourselves about the existence of fate/destiny, lets shape our lives ourselves. Why to waste time in fighting for that, instead utilize that time in using all the possible choices to make your life worth living. Let’s not care whether there is destiny or fate. If it is there or not, that does not bother me, all I want is to shape my life with my sincere efforts!

“We are the masters of our fate, the captains of our souls, because we have the power to control our thoughts.” - Napoleon Hill
